Are you preparing for a career as a cosmetologist or esthetician? If so, then the first step will be to enroll in an accredited beauty school program so you can learn and develop the skills that are necessary to be successful in the field. Believe it or not, your formal education will extend beyond simply learning about skin or hair care; instead, you’ll also need to learn how to develop your professional rapport in order to gain new clients and keep old ones coming back. Specifically, there are a few courses you’ll want to look for in your program that will help you in this regard.

Professional Ethics

All industries have their own code of conduct or ethics, whether officially established or not. In cosmetology, For example, in the field of cosmetology some important standards of practice include ensuring that any issues with clients are handled in a quick and fair manner, that members will strive to project a positive image that reflects well on the industry, and that clients will be respected at all times. A course on professional ethics will teach you this and so much more, allowing you to project an imafe of success and professionalism in the industry that will improve your rapport and help you keep your clients happy.

Business Management

When you work as an esthetician or cosmetologist—even if you’re working for a salon or spa—you’re still running your own business, in a sense. You need to take steps to not only find new clients and get old clients to refer new people to you, but to keep your existing clients coming back as much as possible. And if you work as an independent contractor, learning how to manage and grow your own business is a must. Therefore, taking business management courses or something similar at your cosmetology or esthetician school is a must; such courses will help you learn the basics of running your own business, accounting, and the like—all of which will come in handy down the road.

Marketing/Salesmanship

The fields of cosmetology and esthetics are self-promotional; this means that, in order to be successful and find new clients, you can’t be shy about promoting yourself to others. This is something that a lot of workers in the field actually struggle with quite a bit. By taking a marketing or salesmanship course as part of your beauty school program, you can learn the ins and outs of finding new clients through self-promotion. For example, you may learn how to set up your own professional Facebook page, use a referral program, and even network with others in the field to gain new clients. These are skills that will undoubtedly come in handy regardless of whether you’re working as an independent contractor or for a beauty salon/spa.

Communication/Human Relations

Finally, there’s really no denying that working in the beauty field means being able to effectively communicate with people; this applies not just to your co-workers, but to your clients especially. From being able to get a true idea of what your clients want by asking the right questions to resolving potential disputes with unhappy clients, courses in communication and human relations can go a long way in your future success. Think about some of the best hair stylists and beauticians you’ve worked with in your lifetime; they were probably your favorites because they not only knew how to communicate, but they were pleasant to be around.

These are just a few less “conventional” courses that you’ll want to think about taking as part of your beauty school program. By doing so, you can much better prepare yourself for greater success in your future career as a cosmetologist or esthetician.
